The ‘green dream’ of Bangladesh garment entrepreneurs seems to be going down the drain as they are not getting the expected benefits from retailers and brands. Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ association, BGMEA has launched an initiative to help member factories, interested in working with European buyers, to get their factories inspected by the Readymade Garment Sustainability Council or RSC, reports FashionatingWorld. Read more>>

Fakir Apparels Ltd (FAL) appointed 400 new workers last month after training them for three months at its training centre as the Narayanganj-based garment factory has received 25 per cent more work orders this season compared to the last season, writes Bangladesh newspaper The Daily Star. BGMEA’s ILO Worker Safety Agreement Covers 75 Factories
Bangladesh’s leading trade group for garment manufacturers inked an agreement with the International Labour Organization (ILO) Sunday to improve occupational safety and health at dozens of the South Asian nation’s factories.The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will train 700 safety-committee representatives from 75 factories to identify, assess and manage potential fire, infrastructure and Covid-19 hazards, continuing the “momentum of workplace safety” that emerged in the wake of the 2013 multi-factory Rana Plaza collapse, which killed 1,134 workers and injured thousands more just outside the capital of Dhaka.“Safety committees bring together management and workers to help create and maintain [a] safe and healthy working environment,” George Faller, chief technical advisor of the ILO’s Improving Working Conditions in the RMG Sector Programme, said in a statement, writes Sourcing Journal. This year’s cotton import to cross 9m bales, a record: BTMA president

Some RMG suppliers struggling for export payments
The local garment sector started performing strongly again with the recovery of the global economy. In the July-December period of the current fiscal year, garment shipments rose 28.02 per cent to $19.9 billion. Boiler Accident Injures 7 in Bangladesh as Labor Unrest Rises
Seven workers were injured after a boiler exploded in a garment factory in Bangladesh on Saturday, igniting a fire that was quickly contained before emergency services could respond, local media reported.The accident occurred at Ambia Fashion in Agrabad, a downtown commercial district in the city of Chittagong, the South Asian country’s second-largest. Three fire units rushed to the scene but the blaze was already doused by the time they arrived.
